What does the IHS mark mean:
In the Western and Eastern Churches, and sometimes in Bible manuscripts, the abbreviation of the name Jesus in Greek was IHS or JHS.
Originally, the Greek letters ΙΗΣ were used. In Latin, characters of the same shape H and S were used. The letters subsequently began to be read as Latin with the interpretation of the meaning as Jesus the savior of people. The IHS was also associated with the legend of Emperor Constantine's vision before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge.
With the introduction of Corpus Christi, the IHS monogram became associated with the new Eucharistic devotion.
